Cable terminals are one of the most common products used to connect cables. On the market we can find a wide selection of cable terminals made of different materials and in different sizes. The manufacturers have created a complex system of crimping, which also includes cable connectors and crimping tools.
Cable terminals – types
Cable terminals can be divided by:
- cables , which they are crimped on,
- materials, that they are made off ,
- the shape ,
- the use.
We offer the following types of cable terminals : ring terminals, spade terminals, pin terminals, cable end-sleeves, receptacles, claw terminals, tubular terminals, shear off screw terminals and terminals for medium voltage.
The forms of crimping cable terminals
Depending on the type and size of the terminals as well as the on the type of the wire , that the cable terminals should be crimped on, company ERKO indicates the correct form of crimping for the given cable terminal. Types of crimping forms:
Single indent for copper terminals without insulation and pin terminals made according DIN 46230 for the wire with the cross-section from 0,5 to 120 mm2 and tubular copper terminals with the cross-section from 0,5 to 6 mm2.
Oval crimping for copper ring terminals with insulation made according to DIN 46237 and DIN 46234, and for copper pin terminals with insulation as well as receptacles.
Trapezoidal crimping form intend for copper cable end-sleeves made according to DIN 46228 and double cable end-sleeves for the wire with the cross-sections from 0,5 – 185 mm2.
Square crimping form is used for copper cable end-sleeves made according to DIN 46228 and double cable end-sleeves for the wire with the cross-section from 0,5 to 10 mm2.
Wrapped over wire conductor and insulation for brass terminals for the wire with the cross-section from 0,5 to 6 mm2 made according to DIN 46247, DIN 46248 and DIN 46225.
Another crimping form is round forming of aluminum sector conductors for terminals with the cross-section from 25 – 300 mm2 for the wire with a single-strand and 16 – 240 mm2 in case of the multi-strand wire.
Hexagonal crimping form is used for copper and aluminum terminals for the wire with the cross-section from 6 to 625 mm2.
Stages of crimping:
- Choose the right cable terminal according to the cross-section, material and type of the conductor.
- Check the form of crimping.
- Remove the insulation from the wire on the length that corresponds to the tubular part of the terminal.
- Check the cable for oxides and corrosion and clean it.
- Place the wire in the tubular part of the terminal.
- Choose the right crimping tool and dies.
- Perform crimping until the crimping dies connect or the overflow valve of the hydraulic drive works.
Remember that the cable terminal has a marked point of crimping and you have to follow the right direction of crimping.
